Chhath pooja 2016-A Hindu festival,Dates,history,benefits.

ABOUT CHHATH:
Chhath is an ancient Vedic festival devoted to Hindu God sun and chhathi maiya(wife of god sun).This festival is celebrated by Nepalese,Indian,Bihari people all across the globe.chhath is also famous by various other names such as Dala chhath,chhath parv,Dala Puja,surya shasthi.
The rituals of the festival are rigorously celebrated over a period of four days.This festival comes right after 6 days from the Diwali(festival of lights-showing victory of good against evil).people happen to buy new clothings to mark it as a special while offering Pooja.The best part of this Pooja is that there is no involvement of priest,people themselves can perform the ceremony.The worshiper observes purity by following the rules and regulations required.like they have to fast for two days until morning prayer(usha arghya) also have to sleep on the floor to stay pure untill the last day of pooja.
HISTORY & ORIGIN OF CHHATH POOJA:
Chhath is in the practice from dwapar yuga.This pooja was first organized by surya putra karna(son of God sun).In ancient period,five pandavas and draupadi worshipped Chhathi Maiya to solve their problems.
Another ancient history,The Lord Rama was also the one to celebrate chhath pooja.It is considered that Lord Rama of India and sita of Nepal had kept fast and offered pooja to the lord sun in the month of kartik in suklapaksh during their coronation after returning from Ayodhya after 14 years of exile.From that time,chhath pooja became the main and traditional festival for Hindu.Every year it is celebrated in home land of goddess sita and in the state of bihar of india.
DATE OF FESTIVAL:
Chhath pooja is performed on kartik shukla shasthi,which is the 6th day of the Month of kartik in B.S. According to english calendar,this festival typically falls in the month of Oct-nov.
Chhath pooja is celebrated twice in a year i.e once in a mid-winter and next in start of autumn season.
CHHATH POOJA 2016 DATES:

  • Friday,4th November(19th kartik) is the 1st day to take holy bath.This day is commonly  known as Nahay khay or Arwa arwain.
  • Saturday,5th November(20th kartik) is the 2nd day which is commonly known as kharna.
  • Sunday,6th November(21st kartik) is the 3rd day of chhath which is commonly known as sandhya arghya(evening offerings).
  • Monday,7th November(22nd kartik) is the last day of chhath which is known as usha arghya(morning prayers).
On the last day of pooja after morning prayers devotees will be able break their fast after two long days.
FOLLOWERS & POOJA VENUE:
Devotees of chhath festival are both in Nepal and India.There are large number of followers all across the globe who wait to mark this day as special.
Mainly this chhath pooja is done at the banks of holy river such as The Ganga,Jamuna and also at sacred ponds.They decorate the place with banana plant,sparking lights and many more.
PRASAD:
A devotional offerings made to god which is later shared among devotees.
RITUALS &TRADITIONS:
The preparation for chhath pooja Gets start after two days of Bhaitika and lasts for 4days.
These four days of prayers are named commonly after the rituals being performed on that day which I mentioned above in the section of DATES.

  1. NAHAY KHAY
  2. KHARNA
  3. SANDHYA ARGHYA(evening prayer)
  4. USHA ARGHYA(morning prayer) or PARAN
BENEFITS:
According to hindu mythology,it is believed that after offering prayers,God sun may cure all kinds skin diseases such as leprosy.people offer pooja for the welfare,prosperity,progress,longevity of their family members and loved ones.
